Montessori

“ We cannot create observers by saying ‘observe,’ but by giving them the power and the means for this observation and these means are procured through education of the senses. ”

Maria Montessori was born in 1870 and grew up to become Italy’s first female physician. Her medical work led her to working with children, especially challenged ones, through the University of Rome’s psychiatric clinic. Helping these children develop the skills to learn paved the way for her second career as an educator, founded in the idea that individual development would benefit from children being free to pursue their own interests, at their own pace, in a specially prepared environment with specific teaching materials. The reputation of the Montessori Method quickly spread, with schools opening in Switzerland, England, India, China, Mexico, Syria, and New Zealand. The first Montessori class was taught in the United States in 1912, by Alexander Graham Bell.

Unique. Authentic. Montessori.

There is nothing quite like the authentic Montessori Method for early childhood education. This unique approach enables children to discover their true potential and develop an organized, engaged, and focused mind. The Montessori experience prepares them to be curious, lifelong learners, as well as good citizens, future innovators, and able leaders.

CLASS ROOM AND CURRICULUM

Montessori Education for Your Child

The Prepared Environment of a Primary Montessori classroom revolves around tangible experiences. It is designed to stimulate each child’s curiosity and instill a lifelong love of learning.

Children work at their own pace and choose their own activities. Activities are thoughtfully designed to encourage hand movements from left to right (to prepare the brain for how we read) or top to bottom (to prepare the brain for how we solve math equations).

Difference between Traditional and Montessori Method

Montessori Method

  • Teacher has an unobtrusive role in the classroom
  • Teacher introduces activities to children and then lets them pursue their own interests, while observing their progress.
  • Mainly individual instruction
  • Children select their own experiences, at their pace
  • Mixed-age grouping
  • Children learn from each other
  • Child works as long as they want on chosen projects, enabling focus and concentration
  • The teacher guides children toward self-realization and

Traditional Method

  • Teacher is the focus of the classroom
  • Mainly group instruction
  • One subject typically studied at a time, in allotted time, in a group
  • Same-age grouping
  • The teacher is in charge of lessons
  • Timed lessons, activities, and class schedules break up work flow
  • Child errors are usually pointed out by the teacher
  • Learning is reinforced externally by repetition and rewards

THE MONTESSORI EXPERIENCE

Practical Life

Practical Life is the true heart of a Montessori classroom. By working on real-life tasks, children develop their independence, coordination, and concentration, through a variety of activities that explore daily activities such as eating, dressing, and cleaning. Teachers demonstrate these tasks that explore caring for the environment and the self, encouraging responsibility and promoting self-esteem.

Sensorial Learning

Sensorial Materials are designed to sharpen senses and enable deeper understanding of sensations. They help children become aware of details through, first, strongly contrasted sensations (red vs. blue), and then, through variously graded sensations (various shades of blue). Materials isolate a single quality: color, weight, shape, texture, size, sound, smell, etc., for children to train their focus

Language

Language experiences encourage children to master and blend sounds to build words, instead of the traditional memorization of “sight words.” This gives children the tools to read at a higher level.

Mathematics

Early mathematics activities are designed to transform ideas into actions, using concrete learning materials, resulting in making abstract concepts clearer to the learner. These experiences explore the underlying fundamentals of algebra, geometry, logic, and statistics, plus operational principles, such as addition, multiplication, division, and subtraction.

Science

Science in the Montessori classroom offers a wide range of explorations in areas such as botany, zoology, chemistry, physics, geology, and astronomy. Our intent is to encourage and cultivate children’s fascination with the universe and nurture an interest in observing nature and discovering more about the world around them.

Geography

History and geography begins with the study of maps and the areas of the world. As children grow, deeper explorations of cultures are undertaken. Along the way, they learn to appreciate their own cultural heritages, as well as those of their friends.

Arts

Painting, drawing, music, singing, movement activities, and crafts are some of the ways you will find the arts represented in the Montessori classroom.

Peace Curriculum

Maria Montessori thought of children as the redeeming factor in the evolution of human beings. Therefore, she felt it important to focus on teaching peace early in a child’s life. It is not enough to just discuss peace, but to create an environment that inspires peace.

    Prepared Environment
    Natural Learning Materials
    Self-guided Work

Family-style Meals

With our Grow Fit initiative, we serve healthy meals and snacks to nourish growing children. Physical fitness is also stressed each day, so children develop healthy habits for a healthy future.

Experienced Montessori Teachers

Primary and Elementary teachers at Montessori Unlimited receive MACTE-accredited training (Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education). Each teacher creates their own classroom and lesson guide, ensuring unique classroom experiences. Excellent teacher-to-student ratio allows for numerous individual projects. Teachers are trained to ask good questions to guide children toward self-determination and independence.

Prepared Environment

Practical Life experiences focus on basic movements, fine motor skills, and independence; development of a child’s intellect and concentration help develop an orderly way of thinking. Sensorial learning experiences focus on the refinement of all senses. Academic experiences explore language, math, science, geography, and the arts.

Natural Learning Materials

Unique, authentic Montessori materials offer tangible, hands-on learning experiences. The learning of sounds paired with textured letter shapes provide immersive language opportunities that will lead to the building of words and reading. Math concepts of size, shape, and quantity are introduced with three-dimensional materials.

Self-guided Work

Following an initial teacher demonstration, children select their own work. Small rugs for the floor and trays for tables define work areas so children keep materials in order and give others proper space. The freedom of choice encourages curiosity, discovery, and independence

Mixed-age Classrooms

Younger children learn from older children. Encourages children to teach and help each other. Fosters a strong sense of community, collaboration, and respect. Creates an atmosphere for social-emotional development.
